5 MUST-HAVES
IN VENDEE
The hardest part is choosing just 5!
It took me a while to decide! I love the Vendée so much, and when you love it you don't choose! But of course, I have the whole year to enjoy it! So, putting myself in your shoes, you who only have a few days (or at best a few weeks) to discover it, here is my list of must-sees!
1. Puy du Fou, obviously!
Puy du Fou, voted "Best Park in the World" several times, is much more than just an amusement park. Located in the heart of the Vendée, this unique place transports you through the ages with grandiose shows and captivating historical reconstructions. As soon as you arrive, you will be immersed in a medieval atmosphere where every detail has been carefully thought out to offer an immersive experience.
2. The coast of light...
The Vendée coast is famous for its pristine beaches that stretch over 250 kilometres. With varied landscapes ranging from wild dunes to lively seaside resorts, the Vendée offers a multitude of beaches to suit all tastes and desires. Here is an overview of the most beautiful beaches on the Vendée coast, where relaxation, leisure and discovery blend harmoniously.
3. Noirmoutier
The Island of Noirmoutier, nicknamed the Mimosa Island because of its mild climate which allows these shrubs to bloom in winter, is a must-see destination in the Vendée. Connected to the mainland by the spectacular Passage du Gois, a unique submersible causeway in the world, and by a more recent bridge, Noirmoutier offers a picturesque and authentic setting which attracts visitors in search of nature, fishing, history and relaxation. It is one of my favourite places, there is something there which pushes me to come back and inspires me to stay a little longer...
4. The island of Yeu
The Île d’Yeu, located about 20 kilometres off the Vendée coast, is a true jewel of the Atlantic. Accessible by ferry from Fromentine or Saint Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, this island offers a unique blend of wild landscapes, fine sandy beaches and historical heritage. With its charming fishing villages and preserved natural sites, the Île d'Yeu is an ideal destination for nature lovers and families.
5. The Poitevin Marsh
The Marais Poitevin is rich in historical and cultural heritage. The Maillezais Abbey is a must-see site, offering impressive remains and historical reconstructions that immerse visitors in the region's medieval past. Many Romanesque churches dot the marsh, each telling a part of the local history. Museums, such as the Maison du Marais Poitevin in Coulon, offer exhibitions on traditions, the ecosystem and water management techniques, allowing a better understanding of this unique territory.
