VISIT THE VENDÉE
IS THERE AN IDEAL PERIOD?
Each season has its wonders!
The Vendée is a popular destination all year round, thanks to its pleasant climate and the diversity of its activities. However, each season offers special charms and unique opportunities.
Obviously, these are general averages! Even if winter in the Vendée also has its charm, my favorite time is undoubtedly spring and summer.
From April, the sunny days set in. We finally come out of winter to rediscover nature under a milder sky, and everything seems to come back to life.
It's the perfect time to get out your hiking boots or get on your bike, and go in search of sun. Green forests, coastal paths and hilly landscapes lend themselves to unforgettable getaways.
One of the great advantages of this period is the absence of the large tourist crowds: you have the Vendée to yourself, or almost. This is the perfect opportunity to discover places such as the Puy du Fou, or the charming villages of the Marais Poitevin, without rushing.
Spring in the Vendée is also an explosion of colours. Local markets fill up with fresh produce, and nature is a dazzling sight. You can venture out onto the coastal paths, which offer stunning views of the ocean, or explore the region's vineyards, which are starting to prepare for the summer season.
When July and August arrive, the heat can be more intense, with sometimes very hot days, but this does not slow down the many activities possible in the Vendée. On the contrary, it's a great reason to turn to water sports. The Vendée coast is a paradise for surf, paddle or sailing enthusiasts. Les Sables-d'Olonne, with its huge beach, is the perfect place to cool off while enjoying the idyllic setting. If you are looking for a little more tranquility, the small hidden coves of the island of Noirmoutier will offer you moments of pure relaxation
I recommend taking advantage of the cooler mornings to explore the backcountry, whether on foot or by bike. The trails of the Mervent-Vouvant forest are magnificent, and you can walk there in complete serenity, in the shade of the trees. Then, the afternoon can be devoted to water pleasures: a refreshing swim, a kayak trip or simply a walk by the sea to admire the landscapes changing with the tide. You can even try your hand at shellfish gathering, a very popular local activity, especially around the island of Yeu or the coasts of the southern coast.
Summer is also a lively season in the Vendée. Festivals and cultural events are multiplying, offering visitors something to entertain themselves between sunbathing. The Nuits Musicales in the Vendée or the night shows at the Puy du Fou are all opportunities to spend memorable evenings.
In short, spring and summer in the Vendée are periods rich in discoveries and experiences. Whether you are a nature lover, culture or sports lover, there is always something to do to fully enjoy this beautiful region. Whether you come for the beaches, the picturesque villages or the soothing forests, the Vendée promises you unforgettable moments under the sun.
Sun, nature and beach!
Calm and magic!
Contrary to popular belief, the Vendée is not only to be enjoyed in summer. Autumn and winter offer a unique setting, where nature takes on softer colours and the atmosphere becomes more intimate and soothing. It is an ideal time for those looking for tranquility and authenticity.
From September, the Indian summer settles in the Vendée. The temperatures remain mild (I'm writing this article on September 16, 2024, it's 25°, I'm in a tank top ;))
and still allow you to enjoy beautiful walks, whether along the coast or inland, in the heart of forests and marshes. It is also the ideal time to explore the islands of Noirmoutier or Yeu, when the tourist influx decreases. Here you can enjoy golden sunsets and an almost timeless atmosphere.
Autumn is also the perfect season to go hiking in the Marais Poitevin, nicknamed the Green Venice, or to pedal along its canals and observe the local fauna that flourishes in the newfound calm.
In winter, the Vendée reveals a completely different face, wilder but just as fascinating. Imagine yourself sheltered in one of our warm cottages, after an invigorating day of walking on the deserted beaches, where only the sound of the waves accompanies you. It is also the season to discover the authenticity of small villages such as Vouvant, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, or to visit medieval castles such as Tiffauges, which come alive with light shows.
Winter is also the time to enjoy the local gastronomic specialties. How about tasting a good comfort food of mogettes or tasting fresh oysters on the port of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie? Local markets remain lively throughout the year, offering regional products to discover.
The Vendée offers many activities in winter, including the Christmas markets which are each more magical than the last (Haras de la Roche-sur-Yon or the castle of Tiffauges, believe me, your children will be amazed... and so do you!)
In short, autumn and winter in the Vendée are privileged times to slow down, enjoy nature and local traditions in a more intimate setting, far from the summer crowds. A season apart, which invites serenity, unusual discoveries, and unforgettable memories.
Not sure which time to choose? I understand you... The best way to find out is to come and test!
